1770-1850. English Romantic poet. In 1797 he
moved with his sister Dorothy to Somerset to
be near Coleridge, collaborating with him on
Lyrical Ballads 1798 (which included `Tintern
Abbey'). From 1799 he lived in the Lake
District, and later works include Poems 1807
(including `Intimations of Immortality') and
The Prelude (written by 1805, published
1850). He was appointed poet laureate in
1843. Born in Cockermouth, Cumbria, he was
educated at Cambridge University. In 1791 he
returned from a visit to France, having
fallen in love with Marie-Anne Vallon, who
bore him an illegitimate daughter. In 1802 he
married Mary Hutchinson. The Prelude was
written to form part of the autobigraphical
work The Recluse, never completed.
